INVIVO & CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILTY

SUSTAINABLE WINEMAKING

Sustainability is important to Invivo, and Invivo is committed to embedding sustainable practices through all facets of its business.

Invivo’s two historic wineries are based in Te Kauwhata, New Zealand, and hold the Sustainable Winegrowing NZ (SWNZ) certificate.

SWNZ is an industry-wide certification led by New Zealand Winegrowers (NZ’s national organization for the country’s grape and wine sector). It is widely recognized as a world-leading sustainability programme and was one of the first to be established in the international wine industry in 1995.

In order to hold the SWINZ certificate, wineries are required to submit impact reports on focus areas including Soil, Water, Plant Protection, Waste and People and are subject to annual audits of practices. Invivo also submits a full spray diary annually, which documents all agrichemical applications made to the vineyard that season. Spray diaries are processed for compliance to ensure that only approved products have been used and specific rules of use have been adhered to.

This means that Invivo meets best practice guidelines in New Zealand for both our winery and our vineyards in the following areas:

  • A Water Management Plan to minimise water waste
  • A Soil and Nutrient Management Plan ensuring we are treating the land correctly
  • A Plant Protection Plan ensuring we are protecting our vines
  • A Waste Management Plan to ensure minimal waste goes to landfill
  • A Carbon Emissions Management Plan to ensure we are minimizing emissions

Invivo also undertakes the following practices at its historic winery in Te Kauwhata, New Zealand:

  • Up to 70% of Invivo wine bottles are made from post-consumer recycling glass material
  • 100% of waste cardboard and plastic material used in the packaging department is recycled
  • Where possible, Invivo’s largest markets are serviced increasingly by shipping bulk volumes of ready-to-bottle wine directly to market in fully recyclable polyethylene flexi-tank units, reducing carbon emissions
  • The sites are strategically located near our largest domestic market in New Zealand and finished goods suppliers to reduce food miles
  • A recent tank farm expansion was constructed using recycled concrete slabs to reduce the carbon footprint
  • Using centrifuge technology, Invivo is aiming to reduce liquid waste discharge by 50% in the 2023 vintage
